Ever Fewer Russians Reading Newspapers; Now More Prefer the Internet to Print

Paul Goble

Staunton, January 10 – Three years ago, only 21 percent of Russians said they did not read newspapers and magazines; now, 43 percent say they don’t, a shift that both reflects and helps explain the fact that for the first time ever, a higher percentage of Russians say they would prefer to read something on line than in hard copy, 47 percent to 46 percent.

Those are the findings of a VTsIOM poll (wciom.ru/index.php?id=236&uid=116624) that is attracting attention because of its implications for the print media, advertising placement, and efforts to reach the Russian population (politsovet.ru/57680-internet-vpervye-operedil-po-populyarnosti-pechatnye-smi.html).
